4 Department of Nursing The nurse contributes to fulfilling public health objectives in the healthcare and social systems. The specific domain of the nurse comprises nursing care and treatment of patients and citizens with the goal of enabling them to manage everyday life. The focus of the nurse is the patient who needs help to meet needs in connection with illness, the threat of illness, acute and chronic, somatic and mental diseases. The nurse collaborates with other healthcare professionals to provide health promotion, health maintenance, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and relief. Throughout the entire education the students will combine theory with practice and make observations, reflections and interventions in nursing. As an exchange student you can attend various types of clinical placements in nursing, which can be individually designed. In Denmark, the nurses play a special role in the primary health care services. Exchange students will have a great possibility to study in the municipalities of the North Denmark Region. Furthermore, our department collaborates with all mental and somatic hospitals in the region. In general the clinical counsellors in Denmark are well trained. We have a long tradition for close collaboration between students and counsellors. During the clinical training there will be reflections based on exercises as well as in connection with the clinical nursing tasks. We combine high academic skills with practical experience and offer applied academic learning and a real life approach. The scientific basis is nursing, health, social and natural sciences as well as humanities. The learning and teaching strategies in our department include lectures, discussions, seminars, reflections, group work and project writing. Furthermore, we use our wellequipped and modern skills lab to a wide extent during the studies. Internationalisation Our international strategy highlights student and staff mobility. We receive exchange students in the spring and autumn for theoretical and clinical studies. For international students the communication will be in English or in Danish. The literature used in the studies is partly in Danish and English, and the lectures are mainly performed in Danish. Our international courses are taught in English and similar courses will be developed. Research and development Our strategy for research and development activities at the Department of Nursing is to develop knowledge which is relevant for clinical and learning practices to ensure the education is based on research and development. Some of the activities are part of the UCN interprofessional research programmes and other activities are focused on the mono-professional development of nursing. Projects are focused within the following themes: → Fundamentals of Care and Evidence Based Practice → Technology and Telemedicine → Vulnerable patient groups WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING AT UCN IN AALBORG, THISTED AND HJØRRING: ucn.dk/nursing
