The road to our strategy Since it was established in 2007, University College of Northern Denmark has made itself known as one of North Jutland’s two knowledge institutions. Each year, thousands of students in undergraduate and continuing professional education graduate from UCN within a wide range of fields: healthcare, education and social education, technology and business. Our graduates find employment in the private as well as the public sector. It is the knowledge, skills and competencies possessed by UCN’s graduates and continuing professional education students that contribute to generating substantial value in a wide range of private and public enterprises and institutions in North Jutland and Denmark. UCN provides high-quality education at a total of six campuses located in Aalborg, Hjørring and Thisted. In addition to having achieved a broad scope of study programmes as well as continuing professional education and training courses under our Educational Resources Centre and UCN act2learn, UCN has developed into an institution that is close to and in an ongoing dialogue with the society around us. While UCN has grown and increasingly developed as a professionalised higher and continuing education provider, UCN has also increased its research capacity by establishing research centres, research activities and programmes that are closely tied to our study programmes. These initial steps were necessary ahead of the process that we are now in the midst of, which will make UCN a mature knowledge institution that dares take the lead and create regional value for institutions and businesses. We will do this by creating and converting knowledge that will contribute to development and innovation that will be seen and felt in North Jutland workplaces as well as in the North Jutland community. The process of developing from an educational institution into a mature knowledge institution has required and continues to require a strong, combined effort from all of UCN through clear objectives, culture-generating processes and the boldness to think in new ways. This is UCN’s starting point for this new era that we are in which is characterized by a number of challenges and opportunities for development that arise partly from trends in UCN’s regional, national and international contexts and partly from UCN’s internal development as a unified institution. UCN’s work on our own strategy is also closely related to strategic efforts of the Danish university college sector (the UC sector). The sector focuses heavily on the transition of university colleges into knowledge institutions with research-based study programmes corresponding to similar European knowledge institutions. All of which in the areas where practitioners require development and innovation. University College of Northern Denmark – 2020–2030 Strategy 4
